5TH MINOR EARTHQUAKE CONFIRMED: MAGNITUDE 2.5… The U.S. Geological Survey confirms that a 5th small earthquake happened this morning (Sunday, March 24) just after 6:40AM CDT. This is why we had numerous reports of ground/house shaking in areas near Flomaton, Jay, Pollard, Mt. Carmel, Berrydale, and Whitfield. This is the 5th minor earthquake in 17 days for this area. The epicenter point provided by USGS is probably wrong, as the USGS data points to the epicenter being near Damascus Road and Well Road near the Damascus community in eastern Escambia County, AL. Further data later this week will probably show that the epicenter was closer to Jay, Pollard, and Flomaton.

AN EXPLAINER ABOUT THE EPICENTER… Because the USGS doesn’t have a wide variety of local seismology data reporters in our area, the agency must rely on data from sensors that are not close to our local area. We greatly value and appreciate the service that USGS provides, but there is no doubt in my mind that this epicenter is very likely wrong based on the “ground truth” reports we received this morning. I would bet that USGS will revise the epicenter to be closer to the areas that reported ground shaking. This will likely happen later this week.

YOUR REPORTS ARE INVALUABLE… The USGS is able to confirm these very small earthquakes because of YOUR reports! I am based in Brewton, Alabama and while I’m close to the zone experiencing these minor earthquakes, I have personally yet to feel shaking because of any of the quakes. It is because of the wonderful folks that message me instantly that we are able to get these earthquakes confirmed. Thank you so much for your continued reports! Let me know if you feel any ground shaking or other “earthquake symptoms” (booms, house shaking/rattling, etc.) in the days and weeks ahead. The USGS notes that while more minor earthquakes may happen, these quakes are very likely NOT a foreshock for a larger earthquake.

STORMS POSSIBLE MONDAY EVENING… Parts of inland areas of south Alabama remain involved in a Level 1 (out of 5) marginal severe weather risk valid for Monday. A few strong storms could happen. If you haven’t seen the forecast video for today, be sure to check it out and the lengthy text discussion here.
