SCATTERED STORMS TODAY & TOMORROW; GOOD NEWS IN THE TROPICS… Heavy rain and storms are happening in scattered locales across south Alabama and northwest Florida on this Sunday afternoon. While storms are and will be below severe limits today, highly localized areas of heavy rain will be the main concern. Some of the stronger storms will produce cloud-to-ground lightning. More of the same is coming up this week with heat, humidity, and P.M. storms. There is good news to report in the tropics, however. INVEST 96L, located east of the Lesser Antilles, is weaker and is NOT expected to develop into a tropical storm. Let’s look at details…
STORMS THIS AFTERNOON… Scattered thunderstorms are popping up across portions of Baldwin, Mobile, Escambia (FL), Butler, and Escambia (AL) counties… At the time this video is being produced around 2PM, the heaviest rain in our local area is happening near Gonzalez, Molino, Summerdale, Josephine, Orange Beach, Theodore, Tillmans Corner, and Greenville. We note a stronger storm is happening just to our east in Crenshaw County near Luverne where small hail will be possible in the next few minutes.
MORE POP-UP STORMS ON MONDAY… Another round of scattered showers and thunderstorms is expected to develop on Monday. These will be the “splash and dash” storms just like the ones we are observing today. Not all locations locally will have rain before the end of the day, but some spots could pick up over 1” of rain in total if storms fire up over a given location. Severe weather is not expected. High temperatures will peak around 92° on Monday.
CONSISTENT LOCAL FORECAST… I see absolutely nothing in the short- or medium-term weather model guidance that would suggest any big changes needed to our local weather forecast. High temperatures will be in the low- to mid-90s each day with morning lows around 72°. There will be at least some chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms each day in the next 7-10 days.
INVEST 96L REMAINS WEAK AND UNORGANIZED… Good news to report from the tropics. The tropical wave, branded as INVEST 96L, to the east of the Leeward Islands remains unorganized. This system once had a 70-80% chance of becoming a tropical storm but that chance has now come and gone. The National Hurricane Center says there is a near 0% of this system becoming a tropical storm as it approaches Puerto Rico in the next 24-48 hours. We note the visible satellite imagery of the system remains unimpressive. Elsewhere in the Atlantic basin, tropical storm formation is not expected over the next 5 days.
