POP-UP STORMS THIS AFTERNOON; TROPICAL UPDATE FOR NEXT WEEKEND… Another round of showers and thunderstorms is expected across south Alabama and northwest Florida this afternoon into this evening. Storms will be loud, proud, and produce quite a bit of lightning. Widespread severe weather is not expected today and the tornado risk remains at or near zero. Our local forecast won’t change that much as we go into the upcoming weekend. Several questions have come in over the last 24 hours asking about the potential for tropical trouble in the not so distant future. Let’s talk details…
TROPICAL UPDATE: NO ISSUES IN NEXT 5 DAYS… The National Hurricane Center continues to note in their tropical weather outlook that no tropical storm formation is expected through Monday. I’ve been seeing several alarmist posts on social media over the last 2 days discussing the potential for the tropical issues in the Gulf of Mexico for next weekend (10 days out!). While the ECMWF and GFS models have suggested there could be some potential for tropical mischief somewhere in the Gulf or Caribbean Sea in 9-11 days, long-time viewers and readers know that I don’t put any stock into any wild model ideas that don’t have run-to-run consistency. I’ll keep closely monitoring the latest model data and report any trends that seem noticeable over the next few days, if any happen. The big headline with the tropics continues to be: Breathe easy. We’re fine, for now.
WEEKEND PREVIEW… Scattered afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms will continue to be a daily fixture of our forecast this weekend. High temperatures will remain in the low- to mid-90s with morning lows in the low-70s.
