Storms are producing ample lightning and thunder this evening along with very heavy downpours of rain in Choctaw, Sumter, and Marengo counties in west Alabama. See below for forecast details overnight…
THRU 1AM SATURDAY… Heavy rain and storms will begin in Thomasville, Campbell, Coffeeville, Fulton, Zimco, Grove Hill, Millry, St. Stephens, Toddtown, Jackson, Scyrene, Pine Hill, and Dixons Mills.
CAPPING INVERSION FOR NOW… We note a capping inversion is in place near the 850mb height (~5,000 feet above us in the atmosphere) keeping us mainly dry and stable, for now. NWS Mobile notes in their Area Forecast Discussion that this cap will erode over the next few hours and storms will become more likely between 12AM-6AM.
STORMS OVERNIGHT… Damaging winds and hail will be the main concerns overnight. Again, the tornado threat will be low, but not zero for south Alabama and northwest Florida.
NO WARNINGS FOR NOW… As of 10:35PM, we have no active weather watches or warnings anywhere in Alabama or northwest Florida.
MISSISSIPPI SEVERE T-STORM WATCH… Just across the state line in Mississippi in Wayne, Greene, George, Jackson, and Harrison counties are under a severe thunderstorm watch until 5AM CDT. The Storm Prediction Center opted to issue a SVR Watch as opposed to a Tornado Watch since the tornado threat is now lower across Mississippi and Alabama.
