MAINLY SUNNY & HOT TODAY; SHOWERS & STORMS TO RETURN THIS WEEKEND… Today kicks off a very hot few days that could feature the hottest day of the year on Thursday. Rain chances on this Tuesday remain suppressed with only a few showers and thunderstorms being possible this afternoon into this evening. High temperatures today will be in the upper-90s and near 100° in many spots. Over the next few days, very hot (near record territory!) temperatures are expected. Highs will be around 104° by Thursday. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to increase in coverage this weekend. A few more Tuesday morning forecast notes are below.

VERY LOW RAIN CHANCES TODAY; HEAT INDEX VALUES IN LOW-100S… Today, tomorrow, and Thursday will be drier and hotter than our typical summer days. The air temperature may hit 100 degrees in many spots this afternoon. Heat index values will run 3 to 5 degrees above the air temperature, meaning heat index values of 105° will be possible. Mostly sunny skies are expected throughout the day on this Tuesday with very low (10%) rain chances. While one or two pop-up storms are not completely out of the question later today, most spots will remain dry.

POTENTIALLY THE HOTTEST DAY OF THE YEAR ON THURSDAY… High temperatures on Thursday will be potentially at their peak for the entire year with most spots likely peaking in the 102-104° range. That means there is a real chance Thursday, June 23 may end up being the hottest day of the year. Heat index values will be closer to 110°. Mostly sunny skies are expected Thursday with very few, if any, pop-up storms around in the afternoon and evening hours.

POP-UP STORMS TO RETURN THIS WEEKEND… Showers and thunderstorms will become more numerous on Friday and into the weekend as the upper ridge to our north breaks down somewhat. Temperatures will be more seasonal this weekend, with highs likely to be in the mid-90s. I see no signs of any organized severe weather events anytime soon but storms this weekend may “pack a punch” with localized downpours of heavy rain, gusty winds, and cloud-to-ground lightning.

TROPICS REMAIN QUIET… The Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and Atlantic Ocean remain quiet with no new tropical storms expected to form over the next 5 days. Long range models appear to be fairly quiet overall as well. The Atlantic Hurricane Season climatologically peaks in mid-September.
