HURRICANE DEBBY TO OUR EAST; TRIPLE DIGIT HEAT THIS WEEK LOCALLY… Hurricane Debby is in the process of coming ashore in the Big Bend region of Florida on this Monday morning. Debby will continue moving northeast, slowing down today and tomorrow and being a serious rainmaker for parts of north Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. Locally, a few pop-up storms may happen this afternoon into this evening but I expect MOST communities to remain dry. High temperatures will be in the upper-90s in west Alabama today with low-90s on the eastern side of our region where clouds will be a bit more numerous. Rain chances will decrease in the days ahead and, unfortunately, temperatures will increase. We will have high temperatures near 100 degrees on Wednesday and Thursday with heat index values closer to 110°.
TROPICS: HURRICANE DEBBY POSES MAJOR FLOODING RISK FOR PARTS OF GA & SC… Significant impacts from Hurricane Debby continue across parts of the Florida Peninsula on this Monday morning. Debby is set to continue moving slowly northeast today, ultimately crossing into Georgia and nearing the coast of South Carolina. 10-20 inches of total rainfall are expected in parts of southeast Georgia and coastal South Carolina. Savannah, Georgia and Charleston, South Carolina are in the “high risk” zone today for flash flooding. A Hurricane Warning continues for parts of the Big Bend region of Florida this morning. Isolated tornadoes will continue to be a concern today in parts of north Florida, southeast Georgia, and across parts of South Carolina.
TROPICS: SEPARATE TROPICAL DISTURBANCE MOVING INTO CARIBBEAN SEA… Separate from Hurricane Debby, a new tropical disturbance is moving through the Lesser Antilles on this Monday. This disturbance has a 30% chance of becoming a named tropical storm later this week or into the upcoming weekend while it moves west through the Caribbean Sea. The overall probability of the disturbance moving into the Gulf of Mexico is fairly high. Early indications seem to be pointing to the system moving toward the Yucatan Peninsula and potentially crossing the Yucatan Peninsula in several days, but that is one idea at this point. This is a system to monitor but nothing to worry about as of now. I will have more updates posted in the days ahead about this system in the RedZone Weather app.
