HOT TEMPS TODAY AND THIS WEEK; NEW TROPICAL SYSTEM IN ATLANTIC… High temperatures will be in the mid- to upper-90s today with heat index values in the 100-105° range across the region. Dry conditions are expected today and tomorrow with very low end (10% chance or less, in most spots) rain chances. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will increase in coverage slightly later this week but overall, this will be a week when sprinklers will be needed if you want your lawn to remain green as hot, dry conditions will persist for much of the week.
POTENTIAL TROPICAL CYCLONE #5 FORMS… The National Hurricane Center initiated advisories on Potential Tropical Cyclone #5 yesterday evening. The system is currently a tropical disturbance located in the open waters of the central Atlantic Ocean. Impacts from this developing system will be possible in parts of the northernmost Lesser Antilles, in the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, and in Puerto Rico later this week. The current forecast calls for the storm to become a hurricane near Puerto Rico and move north toward Bermuda this weekend. This would be a best case scenario for the United States as the system would likely remain to the east in the Atlantic Ocean. Forecast confidence is rather high at this point but I will continue to monitor this system until we can 100% conclusively say Gulf impacts are not expected.
GULF & CARIBBEAN QUIET FOR NOW… The Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea are not expected to support tropical storm formation over the next several days. The climatological peak of the Atlantic Hurricane Season will happen on Wednesday, September 11.
