BENEFICIAL, HEAVY RAIN AT TIMES ON FRIDAY; WIDESPREAD SEVERE WEATHER NOT EXPECTED… It is truly just what we need right now in the world of weather across south Alabama and northwest Florida: A good, soaking rain! Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms will be possible overnight and into Friday. Some of the storms will produce heavy downpours of rain. This is exceptionally good news as much of our region is involved in the Level 2 (out of 4) drought zone.
HIGHER RAIN TOTALS NEAR THE COAST… The latest Quantitative Precipitation Forecast (QPF) shows 3 to 4 inches of total rainfall being possible near the Alabama and northwest Florida beaches over the next few days. Those rainfall amounts are not expected over a short time, but rather over the course of the next 4-5 days in total. Rain amounts farther inland near the U.S. Highway 84 corridor will be in the 1-2″ range in total through the weekend.
FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS FORECAST… Scattered showers and thunderstorms will likely be ongoing in many communities across the region tomorrow evening. If you are headed to a high school football game locally, take the umbrellas and rain jackets and keep them handy! Rain may be heavy at times. It won’t be raining in EVERY community in the 6PM-9PM time frame on Friday, but some communities inevitably will have rain around.
TROPICS ACTIVE, BUT NO LOCAL THREATS… There are five (yes, five) tropical disturbances spaced out across the Atlantic Basin. One area of low pressure in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico will contribute to rain spreading across our region tomorrow. The good news is that particular area of low pressure ALONG with all of the other disturbances do not seem to be developing into named tropical storms or hurricanes. That looks to be the continued prognosis through the weekend as well. That is a bit surprising, considering we are now in the peak of the hurricane season. Let’s hope the remarkably quiet conditions continue throughout this month!
