WISH I HAD BETTER NEWS: QUITE HOT & DRY FOR NEXT 5-6 DAYS… October is going to start just like September ends: Hot, dry, with temperatures well above our climatological norms for this time of year. We are slated to get some relief from the heat in the latter half of the upcoming weekend as a weak cold front approaches from the north. That will probably allow a few showers and thunderstorms to happen a week from today (Sunday, October 6 into Monday, October 7). The consolation prize we get this week, however, will be lots of sunshine. Another bit of good news: The tropics are finally much quieter. Hurricane Lorenzo is on the way out in the eastern Atlantic and the rest of the Atlantic basin, including the Gulf of Mexico, is quiet. Let’s talk details…
SUNNY, HOT, & DRY THROUGH SATURDAY… High temperatures will be in the mid- to upper-90s through Friday with loads of sunshine each day. Other than a few passing cumulus clouds in the afternoon and evening hours, most spots will be completely sunny with little to no (0-5%) chance of rain. Overnight lows will consistently be around 70°.
SHOWERS & A BIT COOLER BY END OF UPCOMING WEEKEND… Our next notable chance of rain comes on Sunday, one week from today, when a cold front is likely to approach our area from the northwest. Severe weather parameters remain at zero for now, and there is a high chance that the cool air behind the front doesn’t make it into the Deep South. Regardless, this front will likely knock down temperatures ever so slightly as we go into Monday of the next week. Highs will be in the upper-80s with morning lows in the mid-60s. Baby steps!
HURRICANE LORENZO REACHED CAT. 5 INTENSITY YESTERDAY… Powerful Hurricane Lorenzo is a category 4 system in the central Atlantic Ocean, currently affecting no land areas. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) says a hurricane watch may be required for the Azores islands southwest of Europe by tonight as Lorenzo might graze the area just to the northwest. Lorenzo actually reached category 5 intensity briefly on Saturday evening when maximum winds increased to 160 mph. Lorenzo will not directly affect America.
GULF & CARIBBEAN REMAIN QUIET… No tropical storm formation is expected in the Gulf of Mexico or Caribbean Sea in the next 5 days. The tropics are finally starting to become more quiet. We are watching Tropical Storm Narda on the Eastern Pacific side of Mexico, but that system won’t move anywhere close to our local area.
