INCREASING CHANCES OF COOLER TEMPS ONE WEEK FROM TODAY… No doubt that temperatures will be far above our climatological norms over the next 5-6 days, but there is increasing confidence this evening that we will FINALLY get some needed heat relief as we go into the latter half of the upcoming weekend. Early indications point to highs in the 80s and lows in the upper-50s and lower-60s starting a week from today (Sunday evening, October 6). Let’s look at a few details…
BEFORE THE COOLER WEATHER, ABOVE AVERAGE TEMPS THIS WEEK… We’ve got one more week of temperatures that are slated to be well above our climatological norms. High temperatures through Friday will be in the mid- to upper-90s with morning lows around 70° in most spots across south Alabama and northwest Florida. Little to no rain is expected through Saturday.
HYPE MACHINE ON OVERDRIVE: COOLER TEMPS… I will be the first to tell you that we need some rain and cooler temps, although the hype I’ve seen surrounding our first real shot of cooler air next weekend has been astounding. Please understand that while temperatures will likely be cooler, this won’t be COLD air for our local area in south Alabama and northwest Florida. Cooler, yes. Cold, no. High temperatures will be in the 80s with morning lows in the low-60s with some isolated instances of upper-50s in our northern, inland communities like Greenville, Monroeville, Thomasville, and surrounding areas. Parts of central and north Alabama will be in the 40s and 50s in the early morning hours most likely.
TROPICS QUIET, OTHER THAN LORENZO OUT AT SEA… The Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea are quiet after a majorly active September in the tropics. Hurricane Lorenzo is over the central Atlantic, moving north at about 10 miles per hour. Lorenzo is well away from land. Hurricane Watches will probably be needed soon for the Azores islands southwest of Europe as the core of Lorenzo moves by just to the northwest. Direct impacts from Hurricane Lorenzo in the United States will not happen.
HIGH-LEVEL ALERT TEST ON WEDNESDAY… It is almost time for our next quarterly test of the RedZone Weather app emergency alert notification system. We test the “all app emergency alert system” on the first Wednesday of January, April, July, and October. The quarterly test will be this Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at 1PM Central Time.
