SHOWERS POSSIBLE TODAY; STRONG STORMS POSSIBLE SUNDAY… Rain will be possible today before we dry out this afternoon into this evening. Tomorrow (Sunday) could feature a few strong to severe thunderstorms with a few tornadoes being possible. Gusty winds will also be a concern in the stronger storms. Sunday could be quite a wet day, with 1 to 3 inches of new additional rainfall being possible. Much cooler air will arrive Sunday evening as a strong cold front pushes through our region. Temperatures are slated to be much cooler on Monday into Tuesday. All of your Saturday morning forecast details are below.

SHOWERS AT TIMES TODAY; CLOUDY SKIES… Other than a few passing showers being possible, today will be mostly quiet with no severe weather issues expected on this Saturday. High temperatures will be in the 70s yet again. Rain will likely clear out by the afternoon hours and I expect the evening hours to be mostly dry.

IRON BOWL FORECAST… Partly cloudy skies are projected for the Iron Bowl today. The game is being played on the campus of The University of Alabama at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa. Kickoff is set for 2:30PM CST. The game will be televised on CBS. Initial thoughts earlier this week suggested rain may be an issue for the game, but rain is now no longer in the forecast. Kickoff temperatures will be in the mid-60s.

LEVEL 1 (OUT OF 5) RISK FOR SUNDAY… The entirety of the southern half of Alabama and all of northwest Florida and the Florida Panhandle are involved in the Level 1 (out of 5) low end severe weather risk valid for Sunday. Note that this risk includes ALL of our local area, meaning isolated severe storms (including a tornado or two) will be possible. The Storm Prediction Center has noted that an outlook upgrade will be considered in a later outlook. This is something we will monitor and bring you the latest about in the RedZone Weather app.

ABOUT THE RISK ON SUNDAY… Gusty winds capable of knocking down a tree or two across the region and perhaps a tornado or two will be the main concerns in the stronger storms that happen on Sunday. The main window for storms locally appears to be primarily in the daylight hours.

HEAVY RAIN LIKELY AT TIMES SUNDAY… 1 to 3 inches of new rainfall in total may happen on Sunday across the region. There is not a way to pinpoint exactly how much rain will happen in a given spot, but MOST locales will pick up between 1 to 3 inches of rain in total. Nuisance-type flooding may become a concern.

COLD DAYS MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY… Clouds will move out on Monday, giving way to clear skies for Tuesday and Wednesday. Since skies will be clear, there won’t be any cloud cover to help insulate the earth and act like a blanket of sorts, thus temperatures will be quite cold. High temperatures Monday through Wednesday will be in the 50s (low-50s on Monday and Tuesday).

BELOW FREEZING TEMPS TUESDAY & WEDNESDAY MORNINGS… The coldest mornings of the next 7 days will almost certainly be on Tuesday and Wednesday. Overnight lows will likely be in the mid- to upper-20s across inland areas of south Alabama with lower-30s likely closer to the immediate coast. Wednesday morning could meet the criteria of a hard freeze, with several hours of below freezing temperatures expected across inland areas. Clear skies are expected Tuesday and Wednesday.

SHOWERS LIKELY LATE IN THE WEEK… There is growing confidence we will have yet another round of rain by Thursday and Friday. No snow or wintry precipitation is in the forecast as temperatures will have warmed a bit compared to earlier in the week, meaning just a cold rain is expected. Temperatures will be in the upper-50s in the afternoon hours by Thursday and Friday with morning lows in the 40s.
