RAIN LIKELY AT TIMES TODAY; MUCH COOLER TOMORROW… Showers will be possible on this Thursday as a cold front moves across our region. While organized severe weather is not expected, I cannot completely rule out a few claps of thunder, particularly in communities closer to the coast. Temperatures will surge to around 70 degrees this afternoon before the frontal boundary moves through. Overnight lows on Friday morning (tomorrow) will be near freezing in most locales. Highs on Friday will only be in the mid-50s. Overall, we’re expecting nice weather on Friday and Saturday ahead of a slightly more active weather pattern setting up for Sunday as another cold front approaches from the north. Early next week (starting Monday) looks nice with highs in the 50s and lows in the 30s. A few more Thursday morning forecast notes are below.

SNOW & MIXED PRECIP ISSUES TO OUR NORTH THIS MORNING… Rain will happen locally today, but we note that snow and mixed precipitation (sleet and freezing rain) will be possible across the far northern part of Alabama today near Huntsville, Florence, and Scottsboro. A Winter Weather Advisory continues over the next few hours for many counties in the far northern part of the state. Please be aware of the potential for hazardous travel conditions if you’re headed to north Alabama or Tennessee today.

RAIN MOST LIKELY TO HAPPEN IN P.M. HOURS TODAY… Locally, no wintry precipitation issues are expected today, but we will have a decaying line of showers moving across our region this afternoon into this evening. Thunderstorms will happen closer to the immediate coast or just offshore. Severe storms are not expected today due to the lack of instability.

COLD FRONT ARRIVES TONIGHT… Another shot of cold air will arrive tonight after the passage of the cold front. Temperatures will be in the 30s across the entire region by daybreak on Friday. There is a chance some communities, particularly locales north of U.S. Highway 84, could dip just below the freezing mark by 6AM on Friday.

NICE FRIDAY & SATURDAY… Sunshine will return on Friday with high temperatures in the 50s. Highs will be in the mid-60s on Saturday.

RAIN & STORMS LIKELY SUNDAY… Thunderstorms will be possible on Sunday, perhaps in multiple rounds, as a cold front approaches from the northwest. Details are still a bit murky, but it does look like there will be enough instability to spark off a few thunderstorms. The overall severe weather risk will likely remain fairly low, however. Highs on Sunday will be in the mid-70s.

MORE COOLER AIR EARLY NEXT WEEK… After the passage of another cold front on Sunday evening, Monday is slated to be much cooler. High temperatures will be in the upper-50s on Monday. Overnight lows by Tuesday morning will again be near the freezing mark in many spots across inland sections of south Alabama. The middle part of the upcoming week looks seasonal with highs in the 50s through Wednesday.
