MORE RAIN & STORMS AT TIMES TODAY AND INTO THE WEEKEND… Showers and thunderstorms will continue to be a fixture of our weather forecast today and into Saturday and Sunday. There will be a pronounced increase in the showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening hours, although rain chances are certainly not zero for the morning hours each day either. Widespread severe weather is not expected this weekend but some of the storms may be strong at times. Cloud-to-ground lightning, loud thunder, heavy rain, and gusty winds will be possible in the strongest of the storms. A few more Friday morning forecast notes are below.

TROPICAL DISTURBANCE IN BAY OF CAMPECHE… The National Hurricane Center continues to note a low-end chance of tropical storm formation exists in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico over the next few days as a tropical disturbance moves northwest. The disturbance emerged from the Yucatan Peninsula and is situated in the Bay of Campeche now. Conditions are only marginally favorable for development. The National Hurricane Center puts the odds of development happening at a 30-40% chance. This system will likely continue to move northwest toward the northern coastline of Mexico or the southern coastline of Texas. This system will simply be a rainmaker for those areas. No direct local impacts are expected in south Alabama or northwest Florida from this tropical system.

REMAINDER OF THE TROPICAL ATLANTIC IS QUIET… Outside of the tropical disturbance located in the Bay of Campeche in the southern Gulf of Mexico, the remainder of the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean are quiet with no new tropical storms expected to form over the next 5 days. The longer range weather models extending toward the end of the month remain remarkably quiet with no consistent signal highlighting any areas of concern. It is important to remain diligent this time of year, however, as tropical storms can develop quite quickly, even if not highlighted on any of the major global weather models.
